Stanley Co Durham, North East England is a former colliery town and is situation between Consett and Chester-le-Street, and south west of Gateshead.

The C2C Cycle Route which connects Cumbria to Sunderland passes along the southern boundary.

There are many villages surrounding Stanley such as Annfield Plain, Tanfield, Catchgate, Tantobie, No Place, Greencroft and South Moor.

So what’s Stanley like?

The town’s main shopping area is pedestrianised and has many independent shops and some national stores such as Boots.  Supermarkets include Asda, Iceland.  There are a number of empty stores at the time of writing this article, but some improvements are being seen including an extension to Louisa Centre’s leisure facilities incorporating a new swimming pool and has a fitness suite, nursery and meeting rooms, the opening of a solar-powered bus station and a McDonalds restaurant opening in recent years.

The Lamplight Arts Centre is worth noting – refurbished in 2003 they host concerts and recitals, small plays, exhibitions and seminars.

Are there many local schools?

There are lots of primary schools throughout Stanley region and 2 secondary schools.  North Durham Academy was built in recent years and Tanfield School which is a specialist college of Science and Engineering,  St Bede’s School and Sixth Form College also serves the town and is relatively close in nearby village of Lanchester.
